When you are looking for books to sell, the last thing you want to do is buy haphazardly. Especially when first starting out. This is the quickest way to lose money. Most bookscouts have some sort of tool to help them determine the value of a book. The first is with PDA barcode scanners, and the second is with mobile phones and web access.

PDA barcode scanners are PDA's with a barcode scanner attachment. They allow you to scan a book in and quickly get a result. Optional features include having a earpiece for hearing the price read aloud. Most books allow direct scanning with no manual ISBN entry. Older books will have to have information put in, however. PDA scanners generally update their database of prices once a day. This can be a problem for fast selling books, where the price of a book varies very quickly. Some PDA/scanner combos let you customize the information displayed, while others online return a few used book prices and 1 new book price.

Mobile phones can also be used to scout for books. You must have a web enabled phone to use these features. These can have quite a bit of information returned depending on the website used and the data rate of your phone. Results are real time. Can add an optional barcode scanner to many phones. A lot of these services cost money, but are not nearly as expensive as a scanner.
